5 Tips on Staying Focused While Working from Home

If you’re like me, you might be having a hardtime staying focused while working from home.

I have been working from home for the past six months and it can be hard to stay productive. I get easily distracted and having ADHD doesn’t help either.

Between wanting to lay in bed all day or walking to the kitchen every five minutes for snacks, it can be hard to have a productive and fulfilling day.

Here are my tips for staying focused while working from home.

  1. Have a designated work space.
    • Set up a desk that you only use for work. It’s tempting to work from bed, but your brain is programmed to relax while laying down and this can hinder productivity.
    • Having a room or even just a specific table and chair you always work from helps to foster an environment where you are able to concentrate and be at your most productive.
  2. Keep your phone and other distractions in another room.
    • Whenever I have my phone nearby, I tend to check it every few minutes, or every time I get a notification.
    • Leaving it in another room keeps me from losing my concentration and ups my work efficiency because I can move from one productive task to another without wasting time on my phone.
  3. Make a list of your tasks to maximize your time management.
    • Spend five minutes writing out a list of your tasks that day and then prioritize them by importance and urgency.
    • The list will help you work from your most urgent to least urgent tasks and you can focus on one thing at a time.
  4. Set a timer and concentrate for that amount of time.
    • When I’m having a really hard time staying focused, I set a timer for fifteen minutes and work on my most urgent task without getting up or changing focus.
    • This also helps me to curb procrastination because I only have 15 minutes to complete a task and watching the clock count down to zero makes me speed up.
  5. Take breaks throughout the day to keep your mind clear.
    • Your work should have mandated breaks and lunchtimes. Take these breaks and use them to clear your mind.
    • I leave the house for lunch everyday and that helps me get a change of scenery and feel refreshed when I come back for the second half of the day.

I hope these tips help you stay productive while working from home.
